From Farm to Omnichannel Commerce: Walmart Helps "Produce from Her Village" Reach Nationwide
    2025-08-20,Kunming

    Key Insights

    • The "Produce from Her Village" initiative, launched by Walmart China and CWDF, equips 400 rural women (Yunnan/Guangxi) with livestreaming and omnichannel retail skills, transforming local products into nationwide brands and fostering sustainable economic growth.

    • By sharing omnichannel retail expertise with rural producers, Walmart helps local businesses meet quality standards and scale their operations — bridging the gap between farm-to-table efficiency and market access.

On August 20, 2025, the 2025 "Raise Her Business Plan — Produce from Her Village" philanthropy initiative was officially launched in Kunming. Co-created by Walmart China and the China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF), the program aims to train a new generation of rural female talent skilled in e-commerce and livestreaming. This initiative helps local specialty products reach national markets and expand from single platforms to multiple channels, thereby promoting local talent development and industrial revitalization. This year's program will benefit 400 women from Yunnan and Guangxi, with training sessions scheduled in Pu'er, Baoshan, Dali in Yunnan, and four other locations in Guangxi.

    Leadership Perspectives

"For 15 years, Walmart and CWDF have collaborated to help develop rural women's economic independence through entrepreneurship," said Duanzhi She, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Walmart China. ‌"From the 'Revolving Loans for Mothers Project' to the 'Raise Her Business Plan' and now the 'Produce from Her Village' training program, we have continued to refine our model by integrating funding, capacity building, and channel development. This comprehensive approach activates economic potential and ensures sustainable industrial growth in rural communities."

‌"Women are pivotal forces in rural revitalization,"‌emphasized Dong Kui, Deputy Director-General of CWDF. "Through 'Raise Her Business Plan', we've developed sustainable models for women's entrepreneurship and employment to drive their economic engagement and progress. Walmart's long-term partnership — from financial support to digital empowerment — has enabled women to participate in rural revitalization, benefitting over 18,000 women from local communities."

Nurturing Livestreamers: "Produce from Her Village"Rides the Digital Express‌

Yunnan's unique climate and altitude nurture a wealth of signature agricultural products including teas, coffee, fresh-cut flowers, and specialty fruits and vegetables. Livestreaming e-commerce bridges geographical gaps, optimizing supply chain efficiency and enabling precise matching of supply and demand from producers to consumers. This digital strategy injects fresh momentum into rural economic growth.

The "Produce from Her Village" training program is a philanthropy initiative designed to empower rural women with livestreaming e-commerce skills. The program aims to develop influential female livestreamers who can achieve personal entrepreneurial success while inspiring fellow villagers to follow suit for higher income, contributing to the overall development of local industries.

Adopting a training + practice + mentorship model, the program targets female business owners and managers, village entrepreneurship leaders, and aspiring livestreamers. The intensive training is not the end of it: advisory teams will continue to guide participants to establish "livestreaming volunteer teams" in their communities and set up livestreaming studios in farms and fields to help villagers sell their products.

At the launch event, women entrepreneurs proudly presented their flagship industries and signature products, committing to train fellow villagers and elevate their quality products to national markets. ‌ Through livestreaming, they also planned to showcase Yunnan's breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, driving integrated development across agriculture, cultural, and tourism sectors.

‌Omnichannel Empowerment: Strengthening Rural Supply Chains

Beyond basic livestreaming training in product selection, marketing, and video editing, Walmart has also mobilized its talent pool — experts in merchandising, e-commerce, supply chain and operations — as volunteer mentors for the project. These retail professionals shared practical omnichannel retail knowledge, helping participants think strategically about standardizing their local products and scaling their businesses independently for broader market success. Walmart also works directly with trainees to bring qualified "Produce from Her Village" products into its stores and online platforms.

In 2022, the "Produce from Her Village" program equipped 400 women from Hunan, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu communities with livestreaming skills, enabling them to promote nearly 100 unique local products to consumers nationwide. Notably, Yangque Lake chili peppers from a Hunan trainee's hometown have gained nationwide popularity after entering Walmart's omnichannel retail network that integrates several hundred physical stores.

Since 2010, Walmart has supported CWDF's "Raise Her Business Plan" through initiatives including the "Revolving Loans for Mothers Project", women's empowerment training, and entrepreneurship and employment service platforms. These programs help rural women launch businesses and secure employment, unlocking their potential to drive sustainable economic growth in their communities. Specifically, the revolving loan initiative has provided cumulative interest-free funding of RMB 20.94 million to date, enabling agricultural development in crop and livestock farming. Over 18,000 rural women have benefited from this project.
